Beer & Buns / Pop Up

Beer & Buns is one of the best kept secrets around the Bishopsgate and Shoreditch area of London, right near Liverpool Street station. The temporary pop-up is holding residence above Japanese restaurant K10 until the end of July, just look out for the flashing sign in the window. Beer and Bun

The beers alone are enough to make you a die hard Japanese beer fanatic. I've managed to try maybe half the beer menu and enjoyed each one apart from one. It was a rich black Japanese beer called 'Shikoku' by Coedo, which tastes a bit like Guinness and contains chocolate and coffee aromas. The best beers I've sampled are: 'Shiro' by Coedo with fruity banana aromas, 'Kyara' by Coedo with rich flavours of apple, honey and caramel and 'Beniaka' a multi-award winning premium lager by Coedo, made from sweet potatoes and enhances by malty, toffee and smoky houjicha characteristics.

The pop-up serves Japanese / Korean style Hirata buns with the option of fillings such as 'chicken karaage', coated chicken with Japanese Yozu Koshu slaw. Trust me it's so good! My favourite is the shredded duck bun, however it's been taken off the website so maybe it's not served anymore? The Hirata steamed buns are soft and easy to eat, my new favourite kind of bun! It's worth popping in just to try a bun if like me, you've never tried steamed buns before. Buns are small and are designed to br mixed and matched along with other flavours and wings. Buns are £3.75 each and £7 for two.

I was reluctant to try the fried chicken wings, as usually these taste quite plain and contain little meat. However Beer and Buns offers the most delicious crispy chicken wings I have ever tasted. The delightful crunch of the skin and the rich taste of the sauce made every bite a wonderful experience. I couldn't recommend these enough. The chicken wings come in three flavours: Tebasake soy garlic, sweet and spicy and Korean hot. Two wings are £4.50, four wings are £7.95 and six wings are £9.95.

Get on down to Beer & Buns before it closes end of July and you may even see me in there! Open from 5pm onwards, every week theres offers such as 'Happy Mondays' and '2-for-1 Tuesdays'.
